Instagram Reels safe zone tool
This Instagram Reels safe zone tool is an IG Reels safe area template you can pan against in the browser. See caption wells, Remix, Send, and the tab bar before you publish. Stories use a different overlay — open the Instagram Story safe zone checker on the same crop. Private rendering, no upload required.

Pixel math on 1080×1920
Pixel values assume a 1080×1920 design canvas — the interchange size for TikTok, Reels, Shorts, and Stories. Millimetres are physical equivalents at 460 ppi (iPhone 15/16 Pro Max class) and 505 ppi (Galaxy S24 Ultra class) if that canvas is shown fullscreen.
| Region | Pixels | Percent | mm @ 460 ppi | mm @ 505 ppi |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Native canvas Reels, Stories, and Reels ads all consume 1080×1920. | 1080 × 1920 px | 100.0% × 100.0% | 59.6 mm × 106.0 mm | 54.3 mm × 96.6 mm |
Camera / Reels header Camera, title, and overflow occupy the top ~9%. | 1080 × 173 px | 100.0% × 9.0% | 59.6 mm × 9.6 mm | 54.3 mm × 8.7 mm |
Like / comment / remix / share Taller than TikTok because Remix and Send are first-class. | 140 × 768 px | 13.0% × 40.0% | 7.7 mm × 42.4 mm | 7.0 mm × 38.6 mm |
Caption + audio row Username, caption (3 lines collapsed), and audio attribution. | 780 × 211 px | 72.2% × 11.0% | 43.1 mm × 11.7 mm | 39.2 mm × 10.6 mm |
Instagram tab bar Home / Search / Create / Reels / Profile. | 1080 × 173 px | 100.0% × 9.0% | 59.6 mm × 9.6 mm | 54.3 mm × 8.7 mm |
Recommended safe rectangle Keep stickers, CTA text, and product shots inside this box. | 896 × 1325 px | 83.0% × 69.0% | 49.5 mm × 73.2 mm | 45.1 mm × 66.6 mm |
Text overlap estimator
Approximate how many caption lines collide with Instagram Reels chrome at a given type size.
- Lines
- 4
- Block height
- 210 px
- Caption well
- 232 px
- Platform cap
- 125 ch
Fits the caption well. Verify with the overlay — platform fonts still wrap on word boundaries.
Aspect ratio calculator
Convert any source into a 1080 × 1920 master. Crop uses cover; pad uses contain.
- Simplified ratio: 16:9 (1.7778) — wider than 9:16
- Cover crop window: 608 × 1080 px from the source
- Contain pad result: 1080 × 608 px inside 1080 × 1920
Where to place text on Instagram Reels so it isn't blocked
Reels look adjacent to TikTok until you place them on a device. Instagram’s caption is three lines, Remix and Send are first-class, and the tab bar is a different five-item cluster. A Reel that was “safe on TikTok” can still lose a sticker to the audio disc. FramePad draws that viewer so a Reels UI overlap preview is honest before you publish.
Instagram sets the username in a medium weight with a Follow chip to its right, then a caption in a slightly lighter cut. The caption well is wider than TikTok’s because the action rail is narrower, but it is taller because Instagram will show three lines before collapsing. That extra line is a gift and a trap. Designers who write a two-line TikTok caption and paste it into Reels leave a vacant band that the eye reads as unfinished. Designers who write four lines on a poster and burn them in will collide with the native “…more”.
Display type you burn into the video should not mimic Instagram’s caption. Use a distinct face, a distinct size, and a distinct vertical slot — the title-safe center — so the two layers do not compete. If the Reel is a recipe or a tutorial, put step numbers in the center third and let the native caption carry the SEO string. Search indexes the caption, not your burn-in. Stickers, polls, and link chips are additional layers Instagram draws at arbitrary positions. When you use them, toggle Outline-only and imagine a 120-pixel chip wherever you intend to drop the sticker.
IG Reels safe area: the audio disc, Remix, and Send
Reels inherited the spinning disc but placed it under Remix and Send rather than under Share alone. The rail is therefore taller. A product shot that was clear of TikTok’s like button can still be covered by Instagram’s overflow control. Keep a 13% right gutter on every master you intend to cross-post, even if the TikTok-only version could have been tighter. Confirm the TikTok pass on the TikTok safe zone checker without moving the picture.
Audio attribution is a separate row under the caption, not only a disc. “Original audio” or a licensed track name occupies a 50% × 2.2% strip. Burned-in “song: …” labels here are redundant and will moiré against the native row. Remove them. The camera in the top-left is a Reels-specific control. Thumbnails and first frames that put a logo in the upper-left will lose it. Offset brand marks toward the inner third, below y = 12%.
This IG Reels safe area template is percentage-based on 1080×1920. Device points lie. Instagram composites in design pixels and scales. Always preview here, not in a 27-inch monitor without chrome.
CTR on Reels versus Stories
Reels live in a swipe-up feed with a tab bar; Stories live in a tap-right sequence with a reply field. A CTA that works as a Story sticker does not work as a Reel. Reels need a spoken or burned-in instruction that does not collide with Send: “Tap the caption for the list.” Measure the caption well with the overlap estimator so that instruction remains visible at 42 px on a 1080-wide master.
On iPhone 15/16 Pro Max the Reels tab bar plus home indicator consume close to 9% of height. Galaxy S24 Ultra is similar but the extra display resolution does not give you extra safe pixels. Always design in 1080×1920. Hold the first readable frame for 0.4 seconds before any whip-pan. Reels pre-roll a still while the decoder catches up on mid-range Androids; if that still is a blur or a cropped ear, the swipe happens before playback.
If the source is landscape, convert it first with the 16:9 to 9:16 video cropper or keep the whole frame with smart blur. Then return here and toggle the overlay. Crop for the subject, overlay for the chrome — two steps, still no server upload.
Cross-posting without recutting twice
Keep a 1080×1920 master with a 13% right gutter and a 22% bottom gutter and you can ship TikTok and Reels from the same crop. The remaining differences are caption length and the presence of Remix. FramePad lets you flip the destination overlay without moving the picture, which is the fastest way to see whether a sticker-heavy Reel still holds as a TikTok. For the Stories tray, switch to the Instagram Story safe zone checker — progress bars and the reply field replace the rail.
When the source is 16:9, prefer blur pad for demos where you want the whole board and manual crop for faces. Brand pad reads as a graphic, which Instagram’s recommendation system does not punish, but it does change the first-frame thumbnail. Export a proof sheet of each mode and pick with a phone in your hand. Auto-crop here means cover-scale into 1080×1920 plus a pan. H.264 export is attempted in WASM when SharedArrayBuffer is available; otherwise the canvas recorder writes WebM. Either path is a private video editor — no upload required, no watermark.
