Instagram Story vs Reel safe zones

Stories and Reels are both 1080×1920, but the progress bars, reply field, caption well, and tab bar do not match. Here is what to keep clear on each.

Same aspect ratio, different product

Instagram Stories and Instagram Reels both want 1080×1920. Teams therefore export one file and upload it twice. That file will be covered by two different interfaces. Stories are a tap-through, full-bleed viewer with progress segments at the top, a gradient avatar, a reply field, and a sticker well. Reels are a swipe-up feed with a caption stack, Remix, Send, and a tab bar. Treating them as one overlay is how a CTA in a Story sits under the reply field, and how a Reel headline sits under nothing useful.

Use the Instagram Story safe zone checker and the Instagram Reels safe zone tool as two preflights. If you can only maintain one master, compose for Stories first: the top progress bars and the bottom reply field steal more vertical room than Reels’ caption well steals from a title that already sits mid-frame.

Stories: progress bars, avatar, reply, and the 14% / 16% insets

On current iOS Instagram, the Stories viewer uses roughly the top 14% of 1080×1920 for the status bar, progress segments, and the creator row. The bottom 16% holds the reply field, the left-side sticker well, and the send/heart cluster. Those percentages are why a “Swipe up” era end card at the bottom of a Story is gone: there is no swipe-up, and the reply field covers that band. Put a tap target or a URL sticker in the middle third, not the bottom.

Stickers you add in the Instagram composer are extra chrome on top of this HUD. FramePad’s Stories overlay is the organic viewer, not a catalogue of every sticker you might add later. If you plan a poll or a link sticker, leave a hole for it in the composition — typically a rounded rectangle in the lower-middle, above the reply field. Do not put essential type where you intend to drop a sticker.

Reels: caption well, Remix, and the tab bar

Reels behave like TikTok with Instagram’s type ramp. The caption well is taller than Stories’ reply field and lives a little higher. Remix and Send sit on the right rail. The tab bar is persistent. A Reel that was designed as a Story will have a large empty top (where progress bars would have been) and a crowded bottom (where the Reel caption now sits on top of your Story CTA).

If the same narrative must live in both surfaces, keep the hook in the centre 60% of height, keep faces out of the right 14%, and make two end cards: one mid-frame for Stories, one above the Reel caption well. That is less work than rebuilding the piece after a campaign has already spent.

Ads are a third HUD

Boosting a Story or a Reel does not keep the organic overlay. Meta inserts a CTA button, an advertiser name, a sponsored label, and sometimes a carousel chip. Those placements are documented on the Meta ad safe zone previewer. Never proof an ad with the organic Stories overlay. The button alone can cover a URL you burned in for the organic post.
