16:9 to 9:16 video cropper online

This 16:9 to 9:16 video cropper online converts horizontal video to vertical without a stretch. Cover the 1080×1920 canvas, pan onto the subject, and export a no-watermark 9:16 cropper result in the browser. It is a private online video cropper — no server upload, no sign up — and it is fast enough for 4K 16:9 sources that fit in memory.

Pixel math on 1080×1920

Pixel values assume a 1080×1920 design canvas — the interchange size for TikTok, Reels, Shorts, and Stories. Millimetres are physical equivalents at 460 ppi (iPhone 15/16 Pro Max class) and 505 ppi (Galaxy S24 Ultra class) if that canvas is shown fullscreen.

Aspect ratio calculator

Convert any source into a 1080 × 1920 master. Crop uses cover; pad uses contain.

  • Simplified ratio: 16:9 (1.7778) — wider than 9:16
  • Cover crop window: 608 × 1080 px from the source
  • Contain pad result: 1080 × 608 px inside 1080 × 1920

Convert horizontal video to vertical without a stretch

Cover scale computes max(frameW / srcW, frameH / srcH) and draws the source large enough that the 9:16 frame has no empty pixels. For a 1920×1080 file that means the left and right are lost. Contain scale does the opposite: the entire 16:9 image fits, and the leftover bands are either a blur or a color. FramePad exposes both because neither is always right. A wide establishing shot is a pad. A single interviewee is a crop.

The sample frame on the Open control is a 1920×1080 diagram with the 9:16 cover window already drawn. Use it to teach a producer what “we will lose the sides” means before they shoot. Then replace it with the real clip. This is a landscape to portrait video converter that stays honest about geometry.

Zoom beyond 1.0 punches in further. That is useful when the subject is small in a 16:9 master. It is dangerous when the source is already 1080p; you are enlarging. Watch softness on the phone. If the punch-in is more than about 1.4×, recut from a tighter camera. To convert 4K 16:9 video to 9:16 in the browser fast, drop the file, pan, export — the heavy lift is decode, not a network round trip.

Pan as an editorial choice

Center crop is the default of every naive converter and the wrong default for a two-shot. Drag until the speaking face is in the inner third. If the conversation ping-pongs, you may need two exports. That is cheaper than shipping a crop that shows a plant.

Rule of thirds is a toggle in the overlay layers. Turn it on while you pan, off when you want to judge chrome. Combined with a destination overlay — flip to the TikTok safe zone checker or the Instagram Reels safe zone tool in the sidebar — you can crop once for a subject and verify twice for chrome.

Trim handles on the timeline exist because intros and end cards in landscape often contain the widest, least-useful framing. Cut them before you record the canvas so the vertical file starts on the tight shot.

A no watermark 9:16 cropper that never uploads

Vertical feeds are face-and-product detectors. A 16:9 center crop that turns a product demo into a pair of sleeves will underperform a pan onto the hands. This is independent of platform chrome. Get the crop right first, then apply a safe-zone overlay. Thumbnails are first frames. After you pan, scrub to frame 0 and look. If frame 0 is a bad crop, either trim or export a still to use as a custom thumbnail on platforms that allow one.

We validated the crop math on iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone 16 Pro Max, and Galaxy S24 Ultra by exporting a PNG and opening it fullscreen. The subject that sat inside FramePad’s title-safe box remained inside the live player’s remaining picture on all three devices.

If crop would destroy the scene, switch to the vertical video padding tool and add a blurred background instead. Same canvas, different fit mode.

Private online video cropper — no server upload

Stills export as PNG from an offscreen 1080×1920 canvas. Clips record the live canvas between trim handles via MediaRecorder (WebM or MP4, depending on the browser). When FFmpeg.wasm can load, an H.264 path is available; when SharedArrayBuffer is missing — common inside embedded previews — the recorder is the reliable path. Either way, RAM is checked before a long record so a 2 GB device can decline.

Nothing is uploaded. Blob URLs are revoked when you replace the file. That is the entire privacy model. FramePad is a free 9:16 video editor with no watermark and no sign up because there is no account and no encoder in the cloud. The bytes stay in this tab.

A crop is not a sequence

This tool converts one clip. A landscape edit with thirty shots needs thirty pans, or a pad for the wides and a crop for the singles. If you cover-scale the whole sequence as one file, ears will appear and vanish on every cut. Convert the hero shots here, then finish in an NLE with those 9:16 clips. The cropping mistakes guide lists the failure modes we see when teams skip that split.

After the geometry is locked, flip on a destination overlay without re-importing. Crop first, chrome second. A perfect pan that still parks a lower-third in TikTok’s caption well is only half done. Run the pre-publish checklist before you call the export a master.

Method

  1. 01

    Drop a 16:9 file

Or load the built-in sample to see the crop window. 4K is accepted if RAM allows.

  2. 02

    Stay on Manual crop

Cover scale fills 1080×1920 and discards the sides.

  3. 03

    Pan the subject

Drag so eyes and product sit inside the title-safe box.

  4. 04

    Optional: compare pad modes

Blur and color pad keep the whole landscape if the crop is too tight.

  5. 05

    Export

Clean PNG or a recorded clip from the trim handles. No watermark.
